Replacement of a curved bar screen

Replacing a curved screen makes it possible to modernize existing installations, improve screening reliability, and reduce operational constraints while adapting to existing structures.

We are regularly consulted for the replacement of curved bar screens. They are often complicated to replace for several reasons:

  • Downstream discharge
  • Low water depth due to the shape of the screen
  • Installation in an overhead channel
  • Effluent outlet sometimes located under the screen
  • Waste discharge downstream at the floor level into horizontal or vertical chutes.

Nevertheless, we can often suggest an interesting alternative to the curved bar screen that facilitates its operation, as shown in the photos below.

Old curved bar screen in place before replacement on existing structure

Existing context: a broken-down curved bar screen installed in an elevated channel. The effluent arrives via discharge piping, and the screenings are discharged into a downstream chute. The operator must periodically pull the waste with a rake to drop it into the bin located at ground level.

Replacement work of a curved bar screen on an existing hydraulic installation

Our solution: an SG400 type bar screen, oriented at 90° relative to the effluent inlet, mounted against one of the channel walls. The effluent is channeled toward the side of the bar screen via a stainless steel deflector of our supply. The screenings are thus discharged into a bin placed at ground level.

New curved bar screen installed after replacement to improve operation

Benefits for the operator:

  • The bar screen is fully enclosed and therefore secured.
  • Cleaner installation: no more traces of waste on the civil engineering structures.
  • Unlike the previous context, the waste is deposited directly into the bin. The operator no longer has to do it.
  • In the event of a power failure, and if the screen becomes clogged, the deflector acts as an overflow. The effluent therefore has an escape route, which is fundamental. This did not exist before.
